Reaching the ripe old age of 100 is a pretty big deal, so we are throwing a huge birthday bash for our historic City Pier on May 13 and 14, 2011. What can we do to show this classic beauty some birthday love? How about a parade? Yes! Maybe a Food and Wine festival? Yes! And some fireworks? Absolutely!
To celebrate the Anna Maria Island City Pier’s centennial year, we are pulling out all the stops. A Parade will kick off the festivities on the evening of Friday, May 13. On Saturday, May 14, the “Food and Wine on Pine Event” will take place on Pine Avenue between the City Pier on the East end of the street and the Sandbar on the West side. The festival will feature fresh Florida seafood from the area’s best restaurants, wine worth talking about from local wine curators, a juried art show and art sale plus turn-of-the-century style music including bluegrass and classical music in duets, quartets and quintets. There will also be live art demonstrations where you can watch the artists create their magic. Kids will want to stop by Chad Ruis’ “Chalk Art” display where he’ll be transforming the Humpback Bridge into a beautiful work of Chalk Art. Another part of the festival that we’re really excited is that there will be character actors dressed in period costumes strolling down Pine, telling tales of the olden days and reciting monologues about how Anna Maria Island came to be.
For all of the wine lovers out there, the event will feature a large selection of quality wines. Make sure you snag a glass of Seth Cripe’s Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, Lola. This wine has been getting a lot of well-deserved attention in the wine world, so don’t miss your chance to swirl, sniff and taste! Cripe, a native of Anna Maria, will be there to pour the wine he helped create. Wines at the festival will also be available to purchase by the bottle at a special price.
The Food and Wine on Pine Event will end at 4pm but other events will continue. The Privateers will host a shin-dig at the entrance to the pier that will be fun for the whole family and there will also be and exclusive VIP dinner on the pier. The evening will end with a grand display of fireworks over the Bay. Happy 100th Birthday, City Pier!
Come and celebrate our Pier and the bygone times of yesteryear when taking a stroll down Pine Avenue to the Gulf of Mexico was an unforgettable experience. Actually, some things never change.
