The recent earthquake in Haiti has hit all of us in a way. Although it is impossible to really wrap our minds around the immensity of a tragedy such as this one, we have definitely wrapped our minds around one thing: the absolute need to help. The utter devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti has ignited a compassionate, worldwide “call for action.” And with the kind help of our generous patrons, we at the Chiles Group are happy to be a part of this universal coming together in a time of need.
At the Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Pub, we have a longstanding tradition called the “Fisherman’s Wall.” It started over 60 years ago, when after a long day on the water the fishermen would roll in to “the Pub” for a brew. If had been good day for them, they would leave a dollar on the wall for good measure, ensuring that even on a bad day they could still come in for their beer. Soon afterward, all the fisherman coming into the Pub started leaving dollars on the wall, so that no local fisherman was ever without their end-of-the-day brew – and thus, a tradition was born. This is the essence of selflessly giving back and taking care of our fellow human beings.
Today we continue to keep that tradition alive because kind-hearted people are still leaving dollars on the wall. Since 2001, we have been able to donate more than $16,000 to help out various charities. And for the third time in recent years, Ed Chiles has had his employees take down the dollars from the Wall at the Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Pub – this time to be given to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Thanks to all of the bighearted people who have put their dollars on the wall, the Chiles Group is donating $3200, as well as a generous corporate contribution, to Haiti and the Haitian people.
