Steeped in history, the Village of Cortez is not just one of the last remaining working, fishing villages in Florida - it is an embodiment of “Old Florida”. With its small cottages intermingled with boats, crab pots and fishing gear, Cortez is a historical landmark which hearkens back to a simpler time.
The Commercial Fishing Festival was first held in 1981 as a way to celebrate the Maritime Heritage of Cortez. The event which initially hosted just 500 people has grown into a two-day event hosting over 20,000. The Cortez Fishing Festival is organized by the Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (FISH), an organization dedicated to “preserving the character and heritage of Florida’s traditional waterfront communities”.
