2nd Annual Food and Wine on Pine Event Focuses on Sustainability and History
Twenty-one restaurants, including Southeast High School and Manatee Technical Institute’s culinary programs, will be participating in the 2nd Annual Food and Wine on Pine event on May 5 on historic Pine Avenue in the City of Anna Maria. Food and Wine on Pine, is a culinary and cultural event first established by restaurateur Ed Chiles at the city’s Pier Centennial in 2011, The goal was to establish a non for profit entity to showcase the variety of sustainable seafood and produce that local independent restaurants are using in their menu selections, highlight the unique and wonderful art and culture of the island and to support local art and children’s charities. Food and Wine on Pine does this and more.
The unique and delicious culinary offerings at Food and Wine on Pine will be accompanied by more than 30 wine selections and a variety of domestic and craft beers. Actors in period dress will be performing skits depicting the characters of Anna Maria history including George Emerson Bean, who homesteaded the north end of the island, Charles Roser who built the Roser Church in honor of his wife and Lena Phelps, the islands first school teacher. There will be over 30 unique musical performances. The music at Food and Wine on Pine is a deviation from the music heard at most local events. The music selections include folk, jazz, reggae, bluegrass, classical, blues, in addition to acoustic guitar, percussions, wind instruments and even a bag pipe performance all performed by soloists, duos, trios, quartets and quintets. Food and Wine on Pine will also showcase 25 local juried artists with some situated on the porches of Pine Avenue demonstrating art techniques. Chalk art, minstrels, a children’s interactive art area and a special student art exhibit will all be part of this unique culinary and cultural event.
The event is styled in such a way that clusters and vignettes will be positioned all along Pine Avenue from Northshore Drive to the Historical Anna Maria City Pier, with plenty of seating to take in the various performances and entertainment. Guests strolling through the event will be reminiscent of how the early visitors arrived by steamship from Tampa and other areas to promenade down Pine Avenue to the bathhouse which is now the site of the Sandbar Restaurant.
The event is expected to draw 4000 people interested in experiencing this upscale culinary and cultural event. Wine glasses and plates are available for purchase for a total of $3.00. Tickets for food and beverages are $1.00 each. Most items will be priced between 2-8 tickets. Event parking at the Anna Maria Island Community Center and at Crosspoint Fellowship church is free with free trolley rides to Pine Avenue. Event proceeds will go to benefit local art and children’s charities such as the Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra, Anna Maria Island Community Center, Cultural Connections and the Anna Maria Island Art League in addition to the Anna Maria Island Preservation Trust.
